she decides to cut off

the swallows return—
my mother takes a class
at the local college

bougainvillea
pink origami paper
folded blooms

Land

coastal wetlands
a sandhill crane pauses
in foot-high grass

 

JUNE
New Life

falling blossoms
from the jacaranda tree—
wedding confetti

Animals

lingering smoke
from foothill brush fires—
reports of coyotes

 

AUGUST
Time

Sunday at the beach
passage of time measured
in sunburns

 

SEPTEMBER
Water

the tide comes in
washing away sandcastles—
kids return to school

 

OCTOBER
Loss

fuyo persimmons
hang on bare branches—
I rake up the leaves

Aquatic Life

miles from the beach
sea gulls circle a playground
the lunch bell rings

Family

family outing
to the Christmas tree lot—
