behind me, before me
white headstones

spring morning
children chase a blue jay
from tree to tree

last year's dirt raised into
a pitcher's mound

baby carriages wait
outside the church

too much fuss
for this heat!

the line runs all the way
to my grandfather

cough after cough
from a packing crate—
autumn wind

a laughing gull's cry
dies away
