the Pacific Ocean curves
around me

of she-oaks on sand dunes ~
sunbathers

you should stay here,
Alaska is frozen

Anzac march ~
a child's shirt lopsided
with medals

whale-watchers
huddled on Cape Byron ~
unbroken sea

first frost ~
the straw-necked ibis
spears a tussock

listening for cow bells
I hear the creek

giggling teenagers
pack a phone booth

south wind ~
the norfolk pine stirs
grey clouds

twilight moon ~
a stream of fruitbats
out of the scrub

chain lightning ~
our house too low for the dog
to crawl under

high tide reclaims
the pitch
