Haiku for the twelve months of the year
from around the world.

Poet:     Rosa Clement         Region:     Manaus, Amazonas, Northern Brazil

January

winter rains
the city creek now
crosses the road

February

lightning
the welder’s house sparkles
on the outside

March

mid-day
in the stillness after rain
a vibrant rooster

April

river shadows
the fisherman’s harpoon
aims at a big one

May

absent clouds
the whole plane flight
beneath the blue

June

the rain is gone
no more crickets to look for
inside the boots

July

the hottest night
even the moon is free
of clouds

August

another summer
my old dog’s barks mean
"more water"

September

Independence day
on each marine’s chest
a shaft of sun

October

summer shade
the field’s tucumã conceals
a wasps' nest

Tucumã is a palm tree from the Amazon. It produces ping-pong ball sized fruits in bunches; the fruits have thin pulp.

November

first winter rain
the gravestones’ flowers
will remain fresh

December

a bare tree
spellbinds all alone
December lights
