Haiku for the twelve months of the year
from around the world.

Poet:     Maria Steyn               Region:     Gauteng, South Africa

January

January sun
the mynah's beak
deep in a fig

February

lake edge...
    the toddler leans forward
        to watch a waterstrider

March

a day without clouds
the wind shakes butterflies
from a bramble bush

April

library steps
an autumn leaf
drops from a book

May

raindrops
bead along the branches—
winter sun

June

winter fog
a spider web dissolves
in the wind

July

midnight chill
a shooting star streaks
toward rooftops

August

hazy morning
the old peach tree
breaks into blossom

September

new leaves...
a breeze moves
from tree to tree

October

fragrant night
the yellow moon
above a thorn tree

November

late-afternoon
the wind changes color
through fields of grass

December

twilight moon
two fishermen
share a flask
