Haiku for the twelve months of the year
from around the world.

Poet:     Billie Wilson     Region:   Southeast Alaska, Pacific Northwest, USA

January

abandoned lighthouse --
the ferry slows its passage
through winter fog

February

the glacier today
is Steller's jay blue --
ancient ice receding

March

the glacier calves --
a seal pup on an ice floe
sleeps in the sun

April

skim ice
northbound swans resting
on the lake

May

humpback whales
back home from Hawaii --
the first cruise ship docks

June

grassy June hillside --
grandson and friends sliding down
on skunk cabbage leaves

July

fireweed is blooming
all over the hill --
you reach for my hand

August

bears, eagles, tourists
scout the salmon stream --
bright red spawn

September

quiet cove --
an eagle plucks a salmon
from the clouds

October

mountain silhouettes
against a darkening sky
cabin lights beckon

November

stepping outside
to look for Northern Lights --
first snow

December

drydocked boats
covered with bright blue tarps --
harbor seals fishing
