Bibliography of English-Language Tanka, Version 2.1.1
Compiled
by M. Kei, 2006-2007
Revised
10 August 2007
With this edition the name has been changed to reflect in
the inclusion of major periodicals which publish or have published tanka as
listed in 'Tanka Venues' by TankaCentral.com, plus a few other periodicals this
compiler believes are significant compendiums of tanka literature. This version
incorporates the standard abbreviations adopted by the Tanka Society of America
to aid in the citation of works. In addition, I have begun annotating entries
with regards to what type they are, eg, sound recording, broadside, journal,
etc. Unlabeled entries are presumed to be books or chapbooks. The number of
items included in the listing is now around six hundred titles.
Periodicals are listed only once, in the year they were
founded. The total body of English-Language tanka periodical publication
numbers over six hundred issues. Issue level information can be found in the
companion bibliography, the Bibliography
of English-Language Tanka Periodical Literature, by the same author.
Please note, this is an incomplete listing. I searched
existing bibliographies, poet biographies, library catalogs, university
archives, journals, international booksellers, recommended reading lists, small
press catalogs and websites, the Haiku Archive, the Library of Congress, tanka
organizations, and queried many poets. I reviewed materials principally in
English, but also French and Spanish, as well as some German, Dutch, Romanian,
Croatian, and other international sources, but searches in languages other than
English were not exhaustive.
I included any book containing a 'significant' amount of
tanka, the number being arbitrarily drawn at six or more tanka or a tanka
sequence of any length. I excluded Japanese books in English translation,
unless they were bilingual or were translations of works by Western poets who
published in Japanese, or were by Japanese poets in the West. For the period of
the late 1800s to the early 1900s, attempting to discover when and how works
became available in English is particularly tricky; did Kuki Shuzo publish his
various 'Paris' tanka in Japanese-only, or in bilingual editions? More recently,
a number of Japanese poets have been published in English in Japan, but it is
impossible to know if they wrote in English or were translated, or whether the
English-language version constitutes the first appearance.
I excluded renga/renku unless the works also contained
tanka, tanka sequences, or linked tanka. Often catalog listings, reviews, and
other resources were incomplete, so I erred on the side of inclusion. However,
there are dozens of books and chapbooks for which I have so little information
I could not even guess whether they contain tanka. They were not included. Some
publications failed to give even basic bibliographic information such as the
date and location where they were published.
This revision is the first to omit a few entries that had
previously appeared; specifically, Yamakai
I and II are now known to have
been Japanese-only anthologies. Several other titles have been omitted as well,
either because they have been found to have less than the threshold amount of
tanka, or have turned out to be Japanese tanka in translation which does not
meet the criteria listed above. A bibliography of Japanese works in translation
and their critical scholarship would easily number in the thousands, and that
is a task this compiler is not willing to undertake.
In addition, numerous corrections of typos, spelling
errors, titles, subtitles, authorship,
dates, places, publishers, etc, have been made. As always, the reader
should remember that this is a work in progress, and should verify any critical piece of
information himself. I welcome additions and corrections at: kukaju (at)
