finding
your letter left out
in the rain . . .
if not for that small remorse
I might have forgotten you

the day I left
that grandfather clock
you never repaired
rang once, or so
I imagined

just when I think
I have forgotten you
I open my mouth to sing
and out comes
your voice

how long has it been
since we parted?
the snow has come
and I'm learning from geese
how to fall from the sky

lingering
at the shop window—
even at this age
I contemplate a tattoo
only a lover would see
