I made A Family Business as an allegory for the feeling I had of being an only child during my parents' divorce. I wanted to visually represent the pain I endured having to choose between my mom and my dad. I also wanted to make a cool crime drama. I love these types of movies and wanted to show the dangers of getting caught up in the life of organized crime. Most importantly, I wanted to show that revenge does not fill the hole in your heart, but only makes it bigger.
