Best viewed on a 27-inch iMac with headphones in 1080p. My film, A Hard Pill to Swallow?, follows the digital radicalisation undertaken by the character Ben during a time of vulnerability, which sees him navigating various spaces within the manosphere and ultimately identifying as an 'incel' (involuntary celibate). The inceldom is a digital subculture of men who define themselves by their belief that their celibacy is dictated by women's corruption of society. Despite the popularity of the inceldom, and their influence within wider society, many people are unaware of what incels are, or that they even exist. This is afforded by their online anonymity, as well as the lack of recognition for misogynistic influences within the media's reportage of multiple acts of terrorism worldwide. My project works to uncover some of the digital spaces that the manosphere inhabits and acknowledges how and why men are turning to these spaces of violence.
