Reflecting on my upbringing in St. Croix, surrounded by empowered Black figures, contrasted sharply with my later experiences in Los Angeles, where racism and police overreach became stark realities. ANIMALS delves into my initial LAPD encounter, now viewed through nine years of lived experience. Through the lens of a young Black man awakening to systemic inequities, the film aims to unveil white privilege and the threat BIPOC individuals face for merely existing. Cinematically, I employ a progressive shift from 35mm to 300mm lenses to convey the tightening grip of societal pressures. Ultimately, ANIMALS seeks to enlighten audiences about the challenges faced by Black immigrants in the US and urges white viewers to responsibly leverage their privilege. I aspire for this film to foster understanding rather than deterrence, emphasizing the universal struggle against systemic barriers, even in ostensibly free societies.
