With Appetence, I wanted to explore the sub-genre of dark fantasy horror with my unique take on a neo-noir film. The tone of the film has key elements, such as the ‘detective-eques’ aspect, the crime element, and the femme fatale presence. During the film’s development, I was also influenced by film director Wong Kar-wai's use of visual metaphors and deep, meaningful color tones that helped emphasize the drama in the story. In general, I like the idea of mixing genres, for instance how Tarantino achieves this by altering historical events, Wes Anderson with creating miniature complex production design that gives a theatrical vibe, Guillermo del Toro by using a child’s fantastical imagination to help the protagonist cope during the Spanish civil war.
