Growing up in the Philippines, I’ve heard of various folktales about human-eating monsters who hunt people at night. Each region has its own version of how they look and where they came from, but what’s always similar is the horror it brings to the people who listen to the story. I wrote "Aswang" in hopes of introducing an unfamiliar folktale in a chilling yet entertaining way. Beyond the horrifying aspect of the folktale is its true to life inspirations from a migrant story. Luisa embodies the internal struggles that many immigrants hold between their personal goals in life and the external challenges that they face. I believe that there are more unique stories that need to be shared about culture, traditions and experiences. Filming "Aswang" in the middle of a pandemic is very challenging and restricting. And it is definitely a unique experience that we will never forget.
