I decided to write and direct ‘Can’t Go Home Again’ as I felt that the Science Fiction genre didn’t often deal with themes of domestic violence. At the time of writing the script I was in an abusive relationship myself and had grown up with an extremely violent Stepfather. I’d be witness to the outbursts my Stepfather had against my biological mother and often experience them myself, as did my siblings. These experiences fed into the story of Elliott whom travels back into her own past to prevent a domestic violence tragedy from happening. Elliott’s is overcome by feelings of helplessness, despair, and guilt and decides to take her power back and away from the abuser through drastic action.
