It was one of those pesky ideas that just wouldn’t go away: a musical dramedy about starving artists who work at theme parks. After essentially growing up in Central Florida theme parks as kids, my sister Emily and I had moved to Los Angeles in pursuit of our Hollywood dreams - she in front of and myself behind the camera. Much to our surprise, Emily’s first audition as an actor wasn’t for some commercial or student film, it was for Universal Studios’ annual Grinchmas celebration. This theatrical party in the name of the big green man auditioned hundreds of performers every year, and through her keen improvisation and character skills, my sister landed a role right off the bat. That was in 2012, and now over ten years later, she’s played another dozen roles and performed in many shows across the southern California theme parks. The people she’s met and the stories she’d share about her time there entertained us for years, and while Hollywood has danced around the idea of a theme park comedy before, we felt strongly that the best was still untapped - and it HAD to be a musical. Just being at a theme park is a heightened, musical experience after all! It took a massive wave of uncertainty for us to turn our pipe dream into a reality - a global pandemic for us to pen a script, and several Hollywood strikes for us to finally bring part of it to life. Musical theater geniuses Kinosian and Blair (Murder for Two) gifted us with an incredible original number, and through the generosity of many talented friends, we finally had a proof of concept for anyone who might wonder what a ‘theme park musical’ actually looks like. For us, it looked like letting our imaginations run wild with our favorite collaborators paired with the unrelenting belief that staying positive, even in the face of terrifying uncertainty, will ALWAYS be worth it.
