“Chekhov's: A Work Of Art”
When a Doctor receives a selfless but unwelcome gift, he struggles to find it a suitable home. Revisiting Chekhov's poetic allegory on our perceptions of art and reputation.
Published in 1886, Chekhov's observational comedy remains as relevant and important today. In this adaptation I wanted to satirize the lingering absurdity in the way we perceive art - particularly when it threatens our warped ideals of 'reputation' and maintaining a desirable image.
Through our protagonist we ask why it is that those with the most agency to act independently are often most likely to conform.
Inspired by the likes of Roy Andersson and Peter Greenaway, we imagined a surreal and theatrical retelling, both place and period agnostic to reflect the timelessness and universality of the narrative.
