Filmmaker Statement

When we think about basketball, athletics, and manhood, we tend to associate them with words such as strong, tough, and resilient. In a world where the meaning of "masculinity" can be easily defined by these words, and where "masculinity" is crucial, one tends to disguise their vulnerability. This is a story about vulnerability. It is about, within an intensely masculine setting, a reluctance to expose one's vulnerabilities can ultimately lead to self-destruction. Because he wants to show the best of himself, Felix struggles to open up to his coach, his friends, and even his mother, about his colorblindness. He shuts himself down to the outside world. In his pursuit of maintaining a flawless image, he isolates himself from the world, even though his condition is minor. Felix's experience mirrors that of many of us. Our desire to project "strength" often compels us to conceal our vulnerabilities, enclosing ourselves within a tiny sphere, sometimes at a significant cost. This film serves as my exploration of masculinity and vulnerability.
