Filmmaker Statement

Spoilers Ahead: for Deep Blue my primary goal was to engage with a question that has plagued me for the vast majority of my life: "is there a limit to how far one should go to help a stranger?" From what I've gathered the answer appears to be a resounding and definitive "yes". Of course the answer is yes. But should it be a "yes" so emphatic it reeks of poorly hidden apathy? And why does it seem that the limit for so many of us is at the point of any minor inconvenience sutured to a general "not my business, not my problem" ethos? This is what comes to mind every time I'm asked why Paris (Deep Blue's main character) cares about the waiter he watched be bashed over the head and kidnapped by someone who has sworn to protect citizens of the state. One could justifiably argue that the question is less literal and more character specific in asking "what is it about Paris that makes him in particular go to such great lengths to help this stranger".
