Life has dozens of small, seemingly inconsequential moments that occur with greater lasting resonance than many of the “big events.” While a man might struggle to recall the specific details of a ceremony where he was given a lifetime achievement award, he can remember with razor sharp clarity a moment where he lay in bed as a child, watching skeletal branches sway against the night sky outside his window. The film “DIE” emerged from my fascination with the mnemonic power of those moments, combined with my interest in exploring how deeply rooted generational patterns of response can be. I felt it was vital to explore these subjects in an authentic, artful, and lyrical manner and that the film’s success would be determined by its ability to spark the same kind of liminal experience in the audience that we have as children when encountering those early, primal events.
