Filmmaker Statement

Director-editor Miranda Holms and writer-producer Joz Norris teamed up to make Dog House as an absurdist exploration of the rental crisis. Frank is forced to go to ridiculous extremes to find somewhere affordable to live, giving up his dignity, his comfort and eventually his entire identity. As the film developed, it became not just a comment on the housing crisis and homelessness but more broadly on loneliness and human connection. Our background is in comedy and we wanted to play with the absurdist and awkward humour inherent in our premise, whilst wanting to ground the story enough to make the viewer invest in Frank's story. The result is a film that we feel straddles the lines between comedy, drama and horror.
