As a disabled person, I often feel praised for just existing. In 2020, I worked with a speaking coach to become a motivational speaker. However, I quickly grew of an industry that demanded disabled people in a constant state of ‘inspiration’ and ‘overcoming’. I challenge the idea that proximity to death inspires people to live, which I find both messed up and hilariously ironic. DON'T COME IN... YET critiques the notion that nearing death makes you inspirational, fostering toxic positivity and dependence on others' admiration. I present it as a teenage love story where Jake finds inner peace with his friend June. She's dry and dismissive, offering freedom by not constantly turning his troubles into positive affirmations. Ultimately, DON'T COME IN... YET is a darkly comic love story where the protagonist finds happiness and freedom in the darkest moment WE could all imagine.
