Filmmaker Statement

In general, women have been conditioned from childhood to diminish their expressions of joy and excitement, often feeling compelled to be embarrassed by or to apologize for the way they feel. Whether consciously or not, women seem to do this in fear of being perceived as too “girly.” Even so, when I was young I didn’t shy away from telling girly stories to giggle over with other girlfriends. And so my work features detail-oriented, sentimental, and eclectic filmmaking to portray transformative aspects that women should not feel embarrassed or diminished by, nor apologetic for. As the writer, director, and producer of Dream Boy, I aim for the audience to experience hope through stories such as Girl’s. I want to encourage them to experience genuine joy and stop denying it for themselves as so many have been trained to do.
