DRIFTS is a film interested in how our curiosity for the world is affected by complications in life. Every character in the film is somewhere on a spectrum of being in or out of touch with their curiosity for the present moment: whether it’s Luca, who because of or despite his genetic condition is highly attuned to the world around him, his Dad who is in the process of re-orienting his life to the present due to the difficult changes in his son’s life, or Nica, who in the throes of a midlife depression struggles to rekindle her passion that she let slip away in the grind of modern urban life. How does depression rob us of our ability to find awe in small moments of everyday wonder? How might the story of Luca and his fading eyesight have an affect on others? These questions are at the heart of modern life and DRIFTS puts them into focus with subtle observation and empathy for characters whose chance encounter might have the potential to transform their lives, if only for a moment.
