Dying to Direct
A sardonic, but immensely talented film director invites an old friend to visit him on his deathbed with specific instructions not to get involved with the director’s girlfriend after his demise. But does he mean that or the opposite? While he wonders if he’ll be featured in next year’s “In Memoriam” at the Academy Awards, is this control-obsessed maestro trying to repair a strained relationship or is he looking for a knockout punch? This is an end-of-life chess game with unique, unpredictable psychological dimensions that attempts to address the only questions that matter.

Filmmaker Statement

We’re at a stage in life where we have personally seen many friends and family through their own cancer odysseys. Everyone – as well as the circle that surrounds them – approaches death with different degrees of denial, acceptance, anger, peace, and counterintuitively, even humor. It’s not all gloom and doom. Yet it’s difficult to predict how a person reacts to end of life issues no matter how well you know them. We wanted to make a bold film that faced that struggle straight on but via a complicated, unorthodox protagonist making seemingly impossible demands on the people closest to him. To create a compelling narrative, we married this experience with an underlying conceit about a film director, accustomed to controlling people, giving contradictory directions to his best friend regarding romancing his fiancé after his passing. With this film we hope to trigger a timely discussion on cancer, death and the whole end of life experience which most people spend their lives avoiding, believing it is way overdue. Finally, whether you’re a nice guy or a whining asshole, it’s important to take a moment to let people know what they mean to you, and how you feel about them, before you exit the planet.
