Kenny Hurtado was a photographer at SURFING Magazine in the mid-2000s, a time when print reached its zenith of influence in the surf world. Even as a newcomer amongst a renowned photo staff, his innate talent for shooting classic surf imagery allowed his work to stand out from the rest. While everyone was capturing high performance, action shots — Kenny was focused on a more pulled back, black and white, stylistic approach. He was quickly making a name for himself in the industry, jet-setting to exotic locales with the world’s best surfers and scoring full-page photo features — until a trip to India opened his eyes to another side of photography, forcing him to reevaluate his entire creative process. In an industry that photographers rarely leave on their own accord, Kenny walked away… As filmmakers, photographers, artists, or creatives, our journey is perpetual — we’re always en route to the next thing, and that’s the beauty of it.
