I’m no stranger to racism. Growing up I had to learn to pick my battles. It becomes a habit because sometimes you’re too tired to deal with someone asking why your hair is curly. Though every time when it’s so blatantly hateful, it catches me off guard. I wanted to see if I could capture what it feels like to confront someone spewing toxicity. I also wanted to share what it was like growing up in an Asian household in ways I had not seen before. How persecuted groups can still have unchecked bigotry towards other minorities. What it feels like to call out your family on their racism. How so much of planning your future is not just based on parental pressure, but that a lot of the time, it’s self-inflicted. When I chose to pursue writing versus continuing my degree as an engineer, the hardest hurdle was not my family, but to admit it to myself that I would not be happy doing a career solely because I thought it was the right thing to do.
