This project began after my mother was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease. Her retreat into the disease was slow and painful. My mother was a prolific artist. Something that struck me was that even after the diagnosis, she continued to spend her day in her studio, but she could no longer make her art. We know little about what a person with Alzheimer’s disease actually experiences. It’s difficult for them to convey what they encounter because their concept of reality is skewed, and eventually, they lose their ability to communicate. I wanted to try to understand what it might have felt like for my mother during all those long days she spent in her studio, unable to do the thing that always defined her. This film is my attempt to connect with my mom through the veil of her disease and bring awareness about this widespread but little-understood disease.
