Filmmaker Statement

It is a strange and sad irony that so often when a disease robs an individual of memory, caregivers are the ones forgotten - that is what struck me when I first read “Her Majesty.” Exploring a story of dementia not only through the eyes of a grandmother suffering from the disease, but also through the compassionate eyes of her young grandson was a story that struck a chord having done some work with young carers on a previous project. Their patience and willingness just to accept the needs of those they are caring for along with the pain, anger, and isolation they often suppress has always stayed with me. Queen Elizabeth II's address to the Commonwealth on her twenty-first birthday in 1947, which repeats throughout the film, provides an enchanting and transportative motif that encapsulates our relationship with our elders.
