As a teenager, one day my brother came home limping. His face was swollen from a brutal encounter with police. This experience shook our family and highlighted the stark reality of police brutality, racism, and injustice. Months later, my father did something unexpected. He introduced us to a kind police officer, who was tending to something in our neighborhood. He was not discounting the reality of the trauma, but providing an additional narrative for us to live with. This act taught me the importance of seeing beyond our immediate experiences. "Jump the Gun" delves into the theme of misperceptions, challenging audiences to question their assumptions. Especially in light of the proliferation of misinformation, I hope the film encourages questioning and a more empathetic perspective.
