The dive bar has always struck me as a perfect symbol of gentrification -- a meeting ground for the working class to drink and socialize, being taken over by the higher-earning elite that slowly invade these once-inexpensive areas, turning them into sanitized boutiques that imitate, but rarely invoke, the communities that built them. A sanitization of the violence of capitalism. LAST NITE AT SAM's is an attempt to stretch that metaphor a bit further. It uses the dive bar and its inherent tensions to unravel and reveal the violence at the heart of capitalism, America, and humanity itself.
