Filmmaker Statement

With this film I wanted to explore the inner world of a character at a crossroads in their life. That was how I felt at the time and when a friend of mine unexpectedly got pregnant it got me thinking about how we coast through life until we are faced with these big life-changing moments. That was a very uncertain time for her and she felt stigmatised talking about it. I wondered what I would do in her situation. And what about people younger than me? How do they deal with that on top of everything else that comes with growing up nowadays? So on the surface “Late” is about unplanned pregnancy, but really it's about our protagonist's experience as a young person moving through this chaotic world and trying her best to deal with all those pressures. The pregnancy is never explicitly shown or discussed, to reflect the taboo nature of the subject matter, the stifled conversation around it and shine a light on the complexity of her situation.
