My work puts complex female protagonists in genre stories to subvert expectations, explore urgent issues, and push the form forward. MA’AM uses Queen Victoria’s battle with post-natal depression to explore the pressures on women today. Inspired by a photograph of the royals from 1857 – the first celebrity photo shoot, portraying the perfect family – it foreshadows social media culture as we define our public images, hiding the messy truth behind closed doors. MA’AM kicks down those doors, searing off the gloss of period drama to show the human reality beneath. Bringing a contemporary cinematic sensibility to this historical icon, my vision strips away the façade and lets us into Victoria’s psychological landscape, a palace that oppresses her until she almost loses herself. Her only hope is to step outside of herself and connect with another woman. But Victoria’s last glance direct to camera lets us know that this battle is ongoing, asking how much has changed for women now?
