This film started out as a study in grief and brotherhood. The idea of two distant brothers with a troubled past being united under the loving, watchful eye of an aunt, in the aftermath of a parent dying. An experience that is conflicted in some ways, as when faced with mortality there's an incredible sense of the now - which can touch the sublime. There’s pain there, but also laughter and honesty; unheard history and revelations about the departed that serves to unite the family in a way that hadn’t been possible before. And all this is still the case, but then sitting on top this little family drama is the sinister sense that the main character, Sonny, is on the run and under mortal threat. It was a late draft of the script where this new element came in and the whole film and writing process suddenly fell into place.
