MESSY is a movie set entirely in a bathroom. I loved the challenge of telling a story that unravels in such an intimate and confined space. In MESSY, Mariah explores her Blackness and her boundary setting while the shit-show of a 30th birthday party unfolds around her. Between snapshots of private bathroom moments (many pulled from real life) this film taps into our anxieties of growing up, fucking up, and stepping up. And it was made by a 90% female team, in a bathroom in my apartment, starring my best friends!
