I wanted to explore a bad-meets-evil scenario. In this cautionary tale, there’s our villain, the kidnapper, who we see is prepared for a confrontation he didn’t want but may have expected. As our hero enters she is nothing like we expect: mature, bloodied, calm, and inexplicably but perfectly in her element. I envision the kidnapper may have fallen into his world due to upbringing or circumstance: a good person gone too far down the wrong path and where he is now solely for survival. Mother, however, is a natural predator who spent her entire adult life trying to stay peaceful in the world, like a vampire trying not to drink human blood. By the end, we realize that the hero can easily be the villain. In this moment, the redemption factor that separates her from what she otherwise would be is her compassion, her attempt to be more than she knows she can be; her choosing humanity. In the end we may not know what she ultimately chooses to do, but we learn who she’s trying to be.
