Filmmaker Statement

Initially, this was just a funny idea I came up with about a guy who is trying to show off to his ex in a very misguided way. I was really inspired by Tim Robinson’s show, “I Think You Should Leave” and the utter audacity of his characters, many of whom are very broken men. I knew that I wanted to make something silly, but I didn’t want to make something that just felt like a sketch. Since I really enjoy taking absurd situations and grounding them in some sort of emotional reality, I just went with my gut and tried to create a genuinely dramatic scene about a couple re-hashing their issues in the wake of a monstrous life choice this guy has made to feel better about himself. That approach spilled over to the shoot, where the actors and I truly took the scene seriously. While I’m aware that this is still quite a silly little short, I hope that people appreciate the surprisingly grounded tone and the ultimately sweet (yet disturbing) ending.
