My earliest memories as a child in America was going with my parents as they would deliver newspapers around town. They are a big inspiration, especially my Mom and I thought of her during the whole script process. I guess you can say Newspapers is a love letter to my Mom, and although we are not the only family with these experiences, the story is relatable for many in the community who went through similar moments. The goal with Newspapers was to tell an authentic and relatable story of a Vietnamese-Immigrant family navigating their new way of life living in America. Taking inspiration from my life, my family, and friends around me I believe I have been able to create a personal story that resonates with those who love their parents dearly and want to give back, set against the struggles of growing up as a Vietnamese immigrant during a time we were not as readily accepted in America. Both cast and crew were deliberately and predominantly Vietnamese, and it was a dream come true to assemble strong talent from this community, to bring to life a story we all identified with.
