Filmmaker Statement

With "No Peanuts for Brooks McGill," we took a page from some of our favorite bygone storytellers, sampling everything from Billy Wilder to Sidney Lumet. The film follows a past-his-prime alcoholic sportswriter locked inside a bar after getting knocked out by a cruiserweight. Our scribe, playwright J.B. Heaps, wrote one of those rare film scripts that reads like a polished theater piece, populated with richly drawn, 70s-era characters. We actualized these characters by casting theater heavyweights like Richard O'Brien and real-life boxing legends like Teddy Atlas. These guys had a special alchemy on set, and I cannot wait for people to see that on screen. I have a soft spot for dimly lit scenes of crusty old men in a bar. With this film, I finally got a chance to live in that world for a bit. If anyone out there shares my affinity for these crusty old men, they might just enjoy spending 20 minutes with old Brooks McGill.
