Filmmaker Statement

The motivation for making this film was to reveal the vulnerabilities inherent within our social structures, to put a human face to something we tend to avoid interacting with. As a filmmaker I am interested in unconventional portraits, and what happens behind closed doors. I was inspired to make this film after seeing my father dealing with the aged care system. He developed parkinsons when I was very young and a huge part of our relationship has been navigating his needs amidst the calling of my own life. I am interested in the duality of freedom and obligation and how they coexist in our relationship to family. Within the film, this moment in time is crucial: just as Luke’s life is taking off, Richard’s life has become the sum of the four walls he occupies day and night. How do we reconcile this separation? How can something as simple as following your own path have such painful repercussions? - Bonnie Moir (director, Co-writer)
