What if I had made choice B all those years ago? What if I had never given up this other passion of mine? Where would I be? When discussing the story of PLAYTIME and its central questions with cast and crew, I found that almost everyone had dealt with a situation like this in their lives, particularly those in creative careers. The pursuit of something so competitive often means you give up a lot - even something you might be just as passionate about. This is something I ruminated on last year, and writing Playtime was a way for me to process that. I wanted to emphasise the liminal, in-between feeling I felt by setting the film at thresholds, both in terms of locations and the time of day - the city at closing time, after hours... rare quiet pockets within it, a park, a quiet store... against the continuing backdrop of traffic and pedestrians around you, regardless of your turmoil.
