I got the idea for Reklaw in 2006 when I nearly went to prison myself. I was carrying a pocket knife a friend had given me when someone attacked me in a road rage incident. I made the terrible split second decision to stab him without even thinking about it. It just happened. I barely remember doing it. I called him an ambulance and waited with the cops for an hour to see if he'd live. If the doctor said he'd survive, I could go home, but if the wound was fatal, I'd be arrested for manslaughter. Luckily for both of us, he made it. The experience got me thinking about the justice system in general, and how we're not really trying to rehabilitate anyone. The convicts come out worse than when they went in. So technically, it'd be better to just let them all go free, and I've been fantasizing about how to do that ever since.
