Filmmaker Statement

The film is dedicated to the people around the world, whose land was taken away, stolen by the evil in times of war and conflicts. Film found it’s seed in a poem, that Liliya wrote on her way back to Ukraine from Canada. Unbearable images and feelings captured in this film were coming back to Liliya every time she was far away from home. Making film ROOTS was a necessity, a way to process the experiences of war and find moments of peace, share it with community, transform all the pain and hate into the light. Through light, see the truth that hides in darkness, which is shown through black and white classic filmmaker, referencing great Ukrainian masters. The film is dedicated to the people around the world, whose land was taken away, stolen by the evil in times of war and conflicts. This work is a visual prayer, that holds strong belief in continuing the fight for truth, against authoritarian regimes; support each other to believe in goodness and love on a long and challenging road back home.
