We ignore a lot of what goes on in our world. Selective perception is embedded in our socio-economic and cultural systems, spurring a free-for-all for positions of societal attention and respect. Yet these systems are built on unjust and oppressive ideals, turning many people into voiceless beings exiled to the outskirts of society. Throughout my semester abroad in Florence, I was fascinated by the lack of natives living in the center city. Other than the fleeting tourists, it was a huge, diverse demographic of immigrants, most yet to be integrated into society. I was deeply drawn to the paradox I was living in: An extremely visible yet near voiceless majority population living in the center of a monumental city. In Run Little Rabbit, I invite you to take an intimate walk alongside some of these people as they navigate the joys and frustrations of affirming their identity and achieving full personhood.
