My fascination with flea markets started when I was in middle school. Traveling through the labyrinth of dark alleys filled with bootlegs, knockoffs and spiritual trinkets always made me feel like I was on a quest in another world. As I got older, I realized these markets were more than just an adventure, they're also a way of life for families looking to make a living. Most of the fleas I frequented are in my hometown of Miami, a city that is changing rapidly due in part to developers flipping properties for high-rise condos or new shopping centers, a problem that poses a threat to several flea markets that have been operating for decades. This is where my story started forming. What would happen if two middle school kids had a chance to save a flea market that has been a lifeline for their families from being bought by developers? What if that chance led them on a quest in search of a good luck charm hidden deep within the market?
