It's a gift to be welcomed into the life of such a private person. Quirky as he may come across, Paul is someone who has little interest in sharing his personal life with strangers. Let alone a filmmaker. It took several repeated visits to Shallon for me to discuss the idea with him and gain his approval, and while hesitant at first he warmed up to the idea of sharing his time, his space, and his story with me. An owner of his own unique lifestyle, what I learned from Paul is the very real consideration of legacy that happens when a man is looking at mortality. He was 97 at the time of this project, all of his creative secrets squarely in his head and he admitted he was forgetting things. But the fragility of his situation came with a boyish grin. And, while he opens the film with his observation of obituaries, the fortunate irony is that he chose to collaborate with me to highlight his all-too unique and all-too singular legacy before it would eventually close forever.
