Filmmaker Statement

'Silvering' is the graduation film I made at Edinburgh College of Art in 2021. In many ways, it's the culmination of everything I learnt during my animation degree; and was the first real chance I had to make a film for myself. As an animator, I've been driven by a desire to explore experience with an emphasis on process and materiality. With this in mind, I made 'Silvering' by combining handmade paper and simplistic drawings to take a slightly absurd, horror inflected look at the complex relationships many of us have with our bodies and anxieties around ageing. The film was made entirely in and around COVID lockdowns in my bedroom, and I think it's reflective of that. The loneliness and lack of distraction exacerbated existing worries and introduced a bunch of new ones. So much time spent alone invites all sorts of existentialism and dread; and making this film was my way of attempting to make some sense of that.
