Filmmaker Statement

“Silvertone” has been a long time in the making. I wrote my first song when I was eight, having just learned the “G” and “Em” chords on guitar. It was called “I Wanna Be a Star” and featured some questionable metaphors, but it was important because it introduced me to one of the great loves of my life: songwriting. Years (and many songs) later, I met another great love: a fellow musician. The relationship was a lot like the songwriting process: collaborative and lonely; frustrating and rewarding; mathematical and instinctive. A mess of contradictions.   I make art to make sense of things, so when that relationship ended, I made art to make sense of it. “Silvertone” is my love letter to the creative process and the unique isolation you can feel when sitting next to someone you love. The camera is the third person in the relationship, a witness to the characters’ discontent. And when their words fail, music is the dialogue.
