Filmmaker Statement

SMILE is a commentary on the fragility of the medical system. The film was inspired by my own personal struggles with health insurance while living in the US. Fun fact - my insurance provider billed me every month and never figured out how to get my insurance to actually work. It was Schrödinger's insurance. I somehow both had and didn't have insurance. My coping mechanism was to find the humor in the situation, and so, Smile was born. Perhaps the film will help others feel less alone in these administrative nightmares.
