Filmmaker Statement

"Spag Bol" is a project driven by my fascination with masculinity, particularly within the context of my working-class background. In the midst of 'man's man' environments, where emotions are seldom expressed, I sought to challenge the misconception that these men lack feelings. Often, the only outlet for their emotions is through anger or frustration, driven by the fear of being perceived as weak. The film delicately explores the difficulty men face in openly discussing their emotions, even within close relationships like that of a father and son. In these environments, discussions about feelings are rare, and comfort zones are found in conversations about football and beer – spaces that avoid any need for vulnerability. Drawing from my acting background, it was crucial to present multifaceted characters, ensuring that the portrayal, especially of the Dad character, avoided becoming a caricature of depression. Men, like in real life, may be guarded, but it doesn't negate the existence of their emotions. Addressing significant themes, I aimed for a tone firmly grounded in reality, allowing viewers to relate to the situations portrayed. To enhance the film's authenticity, we opted for a handheld shooting style, providing an almost documentary, observational feel. This decision contributes to the audience's ability to connect with the narrative on a personal level, emphasizing the real-life struggles men face in expressing their emotions. Through "Spag Bol," I aspire to foster understanding, challenging stereotypes and encouraging open conversations about the complexities of masculinity in today's society.
