No matter how silly or entertaining the concept, a film will hopefully always end up being a personal form of art. In the best cases, therapy. When making Spray Away, I realized I was dealing with all the voices I constantly hear in my head, especially those of my parents. The process of becoming an adult and parsing all that info and trauma we learned as kids is something we will carry for the rest of our lives. Bert, our main character, isn’t having the easiest time dealing with all of this. The silliness of a can of spray that gets rid of your problems and a person that gains confidence from using it, is a fun journey to watch. It’s like the origin story of a b-side supervillain. With its universal family issues and general anxieties that all of us can relate to, we have a story that will connect with audiences on multiple levels. I hope you enjoy watching Spray Away as much as we enjoyed making it.
